2001/10/04 My First Computers
π 2001-10-04 00:00 in Computers
It's nice that I have a few pictures of old computers I had. Of course, I started simply with a PC that I built myself, since well, that was the only reasonable way to do things back then :) Below was my desk when I worked during my intership in LA. I was lucky enough to be connected to a T1 link (1.5Mbit/s), which back in early 1997, was absolutely awesome :)

In Sept 1997 I got my first real job with Taos Mountain and moved to silicon valley. I got a one BR apartment, and started to add a few computers.

started small :)

Before long, I had managed to add a few computers and extra hardware, most I managed to get for free:

  • NeXT Cube (donation)
  • Sparc Workstation (SunOS 4, donation)
  • SGI workstation (donation)
  • 3 PCs, one acting as linux network router/NAT (before regular routers did NAT for you)
  • Regular 24pin printer
  • SCSI scanner
  • Network Appliance 450 with 2GB SCSI drives (built from spare parts)
  • Network Appliance 1400 with 4GB SCSI drives (built from spare parts)
  • a few computers got added :)

I recognize an original ADSL modem on top, back when ADSL was special, and also see a Jazz SCSI drive

keeping wiring in check while allowing work on machines, was challenging

Even then, I never had enough space for drives, in this PC, I see:

  • 6x SCSI drives of unknown size, with custom ziptied fans :)
  • 4GB SCSI DAT2 SCSI tape loader for backups
