Ok, so I like electronic dance music, more specifically Trance. When I started in the 1990's, the US was a bit behind in that department.
Still, with San Francisco and San Jose nearby, I've had some opportunities to see some great EDM/Trance DJs. Back in the early 2000's, they sadly played club music in the US that was nowhere close to the hits they had composed and were known for, but over the years, as Trance started becoming more popular, those DJs finally started playing their good tunes in the US too, and maybe from 2004 on, it's only been getting better.
Popsicle Halloween 2004 was really the beginning of great music parties in the San Francisco Area, and thankfully things have gotten even better since then

As a matter of fact, after another 10 years (2015 and beyond) the good news is that Trance has grown quite a following in the US, and places like the SF Bay Area, and while Trance has been declared dead a few times in the last 10 years, it's still going strong here.
Trance Family SF is definitely strong in the area, we've been getting more big trance parties every year, including many top DJs that come visit us what feels like every other week now (as of 2018-2019), and through those events, I made many friends in Trance Family SF. Thanks to you all.

Over those years, I got the chance to meet a few of my favourite DJs, including Armin more than once, and my last hobby has been to work on lights for my shirt and pants (version 3) and (version 4)

2014/05/01 Armin Only San Jose
π 2014-05-01 01:01 in Clubbing
Armin Only in San Jose, 15mn from where I live? OMG, really? My last Armin Only was in 2007 in Holland, and I had to fly there, so needless to say that I bought the tickets 6 months early when they went on sale, and I was definitely looking forward to it.

This Armin only was only 5h instead of the crazy 9h30 he did in 2006, but honestly it was better because it was 5h of great tunes one after another, no filler songs.
Once you add the live artists and performances, it was pretty fantastic. You can see a summary here:

Next, a few auto-awesome pictures from G+:

And then the real pictures, many courtesy of the 30X zoom on my point and shoot camera:

And before I ever had the time to get bored, it was over. A great evening, really:

2014/05/01 Down The Rabbit Hole Of Trance
π 2014-05-01 01:01 in Clubbing
I was listening to Armin's Essential Mix from 2013, another great one you can listen to many times :)

It starts with some movie bits from a Sci-Fi movie I didn't know, and that felt wrong :) I wrote down some of the lyrics so that I could look them up later:

Offset 2mn:

  • we are locked in the event horizon
  • Thank you smitty
  • stark give me a read
  • the reactor is still hot, we have several radiation leaks
  • do I have pressure?
  • there is no gravity, reactors are offline
  • brought most primary systems online
  • Offset 10mn:

  • brought most primary systems online, for now
  • stark, what's our status?
  • the antenna array is totally fried. We've got no radio, no laser, no high gain, no one is coming to help us
  • Offset 19mn:

  • She's all right, it's ok. You're safe now
  • Justin! Cooper!
  • They're fine, they're with us
  • Offset 28mn:

  • Look, if what the ... tells us is true, Othis ship has been on the boundaries of our universe of known scientific reality. Who knows where it's been, what it's seen, or what it's brought back with it
  • Offset 2h27:

  • I need to be on that ship
  • Once we secure the ship, we bring you on.
  • I'm sorry, this is unacceptable, I need to be on that ship.
  • Once we secure the ship, that's the way it is. I need you to guide us from the comm station, this is where I need you. Help us do our jobs.
  • I took note of the script bits, plugged them into google and of course it was a known Sci-Fi movie that someone went through the trouble of entirely hand transcribing, so my search was easy.
The movie was Event Horizon, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119081/ , which was an enjoyable watch.

But that wasn't the end of it, some lyrics in that ASOT were different:

  • At 43mn: Do you know what your problem is? You got nothing to do in your life. Why don't you get a job? Do something... be a nurse.
  • At 2h: We'd like to discuss something that if of interest to all of us here. You have a problem Tony, we have a problem.
  • That didn't take too long to trace to Scarface. I need to watch this again :)

Last but not least, 1h24mn in,there was a nice quote which I could tell was from Morgan Friedman, and I traced it to Shawshank Redemption, which I had but apparently had never watched, so I watched that too. Great movie.
"I look back at the way I was then... I young stupid kid that committed that terrible crime. I want to talk to him, I want to try to talk some sense to him, tell him the way things are...". Oh, and at the very end of the mix:

  • We just have to put it behind us... move on.
  • I'm done. Everything stops.
  • Nothing stops. Nothing...
  • Then, while watching Shawshank Redemption, I heard this other great piano tune I already knew, Thomas Newman - Brooks was here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmjqO7DD14I
Of course, I had heard it in other Trance mixes before, it's an awesome piano track. Interestingly, the track is called "Compass and Guns" in the movie soundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v04F8_sHLJk

Here is the "original" trance track I had heard, which turns out was from solarstone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8hmA5ZIXDI
And I found another very nice mix done by someone else: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5Rfv4b1IQA

So I went from trance to movie, which then brought me back to other trance, full circle. I like how it all pieces together, thanks to a few google searches :)
