Ok, so I like Techno, more specifically Trance. Unfortunately, the US, it's let's just say... a bit behind in that department. If you ever hear such music on the radio, or even in the street, let me know (for instance, in Australia, I heard great Techno in even a waterslide park of all places).
Anyway, at least, with San Francisco nearby, I've had some opportunities to see some great DJs, even if at least at 1015, I've often been disappointed by what they played compared to their usual sets (it's been better overall at Ruby Skye in the recent years).

Over time, I've seen many of my favorite DJs across the world, whether it was locally, in New York City, Canada, Australia, and of course Ibiza, and at Halloween 2004, I finally attended some great local parties that proved that you could get the good stuff locally too (even if all the artists came from other countries :-).
That said, I ended up finding out that some of my favourite DJs who put out great CDs and mixes, unfortunately mixed mostly boring tunes when I saw them live. That was quite a disappointment, but I have been hanging on for the few times where some DJs did actually play great live sets). It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it :-)

2005/02/28 Live From Netherlands, this is Armin Van Buuuuuuren....

Current Music: AVB - ASOT 186 (live from Armin's home)
Current Mood: Good

I've often been missing the live broadcast since it's in the middle of my work day, but I made a point to listen to it today since out of 180 continuous weeks, I only barely caught one on the original radio station (Id &T; ), until it got cancelled there for some weird reason.

Anyway, Armin is now playing out of ETN.FM , from his home, and it is being broadcast over the internet to thousands of listeners worldwide (pretty cool use of technology BTW, 10 years ago people would have looked at you weird if you told them that you'd be able to do that. ETN can broadcast over the internet to 40,000 simultaneous listeners).
It's kind of fun (albeit a bit distracting) to read live comments about the tracks and responses from Armin while he's doing the mix and announcing the tracks.

Random comments from Armin on irc during the mix:
  • In my opinion, this genre needs a new name and then we all love it again. Trance is now considered cheesy, just because it's trance. When I made Blue Fear they called it "club music".
  • Shit man, all this discussion about trance, about progressive, what the hell! To me it's still dancemusic
  • Let's talk about music, wether you call it trance, progressive or your moms cake.
  • A state of trance doesn't say the show is about trance, but it puts you in a state of trance. lol

thump, thump, thump :)

And don't forget what happens every time you listen to ASOT
