2024/06/02 Xoogler LTA (Lighter Than Air) Moffett Visit and Lunch
π 2024-06-02 01:01 in Google
A big thanks to Kerah for organizing this visit of LTA at Moffett Hanger 2 for OG Xooglers. A few of us met up sunday morning to get a guided tour:

I'm not too sure what's happening to hangar 3
I'm not too sure what's happening to hangar 3

We met at hangar 2, which has been hosting LTA for the last few years. I wish I had pictures of the inside, but we were requested not to take any, so I complied. Inside had the current version of the newest airship LTA designed and built, it was pretty massive. They are using some new manufacturing techniques to build an inside frame quicker than via other methods, probably lighter too I assume. The shape with motors allows for a speed of 80 to 100kts which isn't bad for an airship:

The presentation was very insightful, but I'm not sure if there will be a real market for airships, given their limited speed, and limitations on how they can be used. Time will tell.

After a nice tour and presentation, we did a group picture and went to have lunch at a new google building with a cafe for visitors:

While in Dubai, it would have been silly not to visit the local Google Office, so I went on sunday morning, which is monday equivalent there, and while the staff wasn't quite there yet, the security folks were nice enough to give me a quick guided tour. The office is still a bit new, but definitely has room for growth, which makes sense in a city like Dubai. Like all other offices, it had nice decors and a local touch. Thank you for the visit!

2020/01/15 Linux.conf.au 2020 Main Talk: Planning for and Handling Failures from Open Hardware, Aviation, to Production at Google
π 2020-01-15 01:01 in Google, Linux, Public
As part of Linux.conf.au 2020, I gave my main talk Planning for and handling failures from open hardware, aviation, to production at Google.

The talk focussed on failures I've encountered in multiple fields, and what I learned from reading from other people's failures, a common practise in aviation that has saved countless lives in not re-creating failures and accidents out of ignorance.
As they say in aviation "experience is a cruel teacher: she gives you the test first, and if you survive, then you get to learn the lesson".

After looking at examples of failures we experienced at Google, I give a fair amount of examples from aviation, from AF447, QF32, and the Boeing 737 Max disaster which is so many failures in so many ways that it takes a while to describe in details. My hope is that engineers in a similar situation where they know they are getting overruled, can use other escallation steps to avoid disaster for others.

You can get the talk PDF or openoffice source from here. Otherwise, you can read the slides below and watch the video recording:

2019/11/06 Visiting a Few of the Many HTC/Google Buildings in Taiwan
π 2019-11-06 01:01 in Google
I had a hard time believing that it had been 5 years since we visited the Google Office in Taipei 101, but sure enough, it was. I was a bit sad that we went through so much of Taiwan then, and didn't get to visit all those HTC now Google offices, which weren't part of Google back then.

As part of a 7H layover in Taipei on our way to Palau, I figured it'd be more fun to spend a bit of time around Taipei, than to spend the 7h getting drunk in some lounge, so we took an uber bright an early to New Taipei City/Bitan.
Then, we went to visit the couple of HTC buildings there. They were very empty when we arrived as we got in before official work hours:

2019/10/30 Googleween 2019
π 2019-10-30 01:01 in Google, Halloween
Like recent years, Googleween now includes a full metal detector and prohibition of any costume items that look like weapons, including lightsabers and plastic swords. That's a bit over reacting in my opinion, but oh well. My costume of course thoroughly failed the metal detector, but looked at the guy with "what are we doing here, I work here", and he said "you probably don't have IEDs" and he let me in.

Once in, the decors and attactions were well done. They also did a reasonable job of handling the crowd loads so that you didn't have to stay in line for too long:

2019/10/10 Quick visit of Google Frankfurt
π 2019-10-10 01:01 in Google
The main Google office in Germany is in Munich, but Frankfurt also has an office. Because I had a longish layover in FRA, I figured I'd go in town to visit the old town and the nearby google office in the financial district (pro tip, FRA is terrible right now, getting out of the secure zone had a huge cost when I came back, and worst checkpoint ever).
Turns out the office is actually half a floor in the UBS building with mostly techical sales and cloud, but it is growing quickly. Also, what they didn't have in size, they made up in welcome. Yuriy Babenko was super nice and give me a quick tour, including a description of the great views you can get from their 24th floor. Thank Yuriy.

2018/05/25 Visiting 4 of the many Google Manila Offices
π 2018-05-25 01:01 in Google, Philippines
Google actually has 7 offices in Manila, after landing there, Jennifer, Arturo and I went to see 4 of them. The contrast was pretty interesting between the GOGO (Google Owned, Google Operated) buildings and the GOVO ones (Vendor Operated). The latter ones were mostly used for call centers. Nice to see them.
We went to see NETP (2 buildings), WCC, and UBT1 which had 10 different floors. The facilities folks were super nice and helpful, they answered my questions before arriving and recommended which buildings to visit.

The vendor buildings were interesting in that they had nap rooms apparently due to staff being there 24x7 to do support, and they also had lots of lockers maybe due to vendors not allowed to bring recording devices inside the building (which includes phones), they were probably also helpful for people who bring scooter helmets which may not fit at their small desk.
We went to see NETP (2 buildings), WCC, and UBT1 which had 10 different floors. The density was also quite high, but when we came to visit not too many people were working, it was probably a quiet time.
