I hadn't been in about 10 years, and I was impressed by the new cars driving around:

It was nice to be back in Seoul. I had seen most of it last time

Quick flight from Japan, in a plane way big for such a 2H flight :)

Shopping streets are lively:

Gyeongbokgung Palace is always impressive:

Some random picts, they are geotagged:

Nice cultural villages:

Seoul still has the longest city wall in the world:

Next door was Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) with the DDP Digital Art Museum (clickme):

I had done the Eastern South Korea Tour 9 years prior, so it was very nice to be able to do the other half. The tour guy was full of energy and lots of fun :)

Started with an old fortress site that didn't have a lot left, but nice park:

Next stop was Jeonju Hanok Village, definitely a highlight, very cute village:

The next day, we went to see a tea growing field:

and the exciting part after that was the Suncheon Bay Nature Reserve, which was very exciting to me because it had mudskippers, the first ones I've seen in the wild:

Check out the video:

From there, the next day was supposed to be in Busan, but given how much there was to do there, I opted to skip the group and do my own tour (read Busan on this page)

Nice to be back in Busan after many years. I ditched the tour to do a lot more things there in one day, which worked great except for a lot of rain:

While asking google gemini AI for new atractions in Seoul, it sgugested Skybridge, which indeed was new, somewhat scary and fun
Buying a ticket online without being korean was pretty much impossible, it required a korean national ID and trackable korean phone number. Thankfully I had a local xoogler friend who (thanks Adam) was able to get those for me. In the end, the timeslot I wanted (just around sunset, the best one), did not sell out, but that was hard to predict:

yes, it is a bit scary :)

The elevator ride, was fun:

Myeong Dong is full of stores, including cat cafés. I only had time to visit 2 of them, but there were plenty more:

So, let me start by saying that it's not really worth going out of your way to visit, but since I was already saying in Incheon for EDC Korea 2025, it didn't make sense to go back to Seoul for half a day given that it's almost 2h each way.

That said, this is what I found nearby (and that was stil 30 to 40mn drive, ICN airport is really out of the way):

let's start with a great find I made, 'with orange pieces', haha

Found a nice museum on writings around the ages:

Then went for a nearby chinatown and portion of the town with cute decors:

Then, went to a waterfront:

I had been a full 9 years since I first and last visited South Korea in 2016, you can read my notes here. I do invite you to read those notes as my previous trip was longer than this one.

Now that it's out of the way, this trip allowed me to see how Korea had changed in 9 years, as well as do the Western part of the Korea tour (last time I only had time for the Eastern part).

  • You can go here for the list of posts for this trip
  • the new cars were quite cool
  • I had seen most of the relevant parts of Soul last time, so this time around it was a few extra things, including Lotte Tower and the brand new skywalk
  • That said, I found South Korea became more China-like with government surveillance, national ID system required to make any purchase online (I was unable to buy skywalk tickets)
  • Similarly, the government outlawed google maps navigation as well as any navigation app that isn't their own sponsored naver.
  • And naver is not close to being great, as well as obsolutely impossible to use or register for on a computer without speaking korean. Seriously WTAF? That felt so over-reaching and unnecessary
  • But while I don't like government overreach, I do have to say that while South Korea is technically still in a state of war, they had no annoying searches while entering buildings or museums, unlike let's say Turkey, which was quite annoying on that front, or even the UK which honestly is pretty annoying on that front too.
  • For the rest, compared to my previous report, I don't have a lot to add. I was super excited to have seen my first mudskippers in the wild during the western tour. Glad to have been back.

Otherwise, being there for EDC Korea was loads of fun! (clickme)
